Meet Alex
Owner, Alex Armstrong, is a native of Charleston, South Carolina, where his passion for boating and the marine industry was born and flourished on the Charleston Intracoastal Waterway. A graduate of Middleton High School, Alex initially began a career in the vending business, where he worked regularly with vendors across the South Carolina coast, from Folly Beach to Murrell’s Inlet, before ultimately returning to the marine and boating industry – his first love. Adding to his lifelong experience repairing and upgrading boating electrical systems, Alex then worked as a team lead in the rigging department for Freeman Boatworks, Inc., where he played an integral role in the manufacture of custom catamarans, from initial fabrication of the hull, to the final quality check, including the installation of custom instruments and elements throughout the production process.
In 2021, Alex then expanded his skill set to include fabrication of his own custom made boat parts and CNC machine operation, from which Lowcountry Marine Customs was soon born. In 2023, Alex also partnered with Hydrafoam, Inc. to incorporate the personalized selection and installation of quality marine decking material into Lowcountry Marine Customs’ growing array of products and services. In addition to designing and manufacturing replacement and upgraded boating components – conceptualized and created to customers’ unique specifications – Alex also applies the art and science of design to custom-made décor, not just for boats, but for outdoor kitchens, indoor living spaces, and beyond.
In his spare time, Alex can be found working or cruising in his own boat, watching college football, or traveling the globe with his wife to the world’s most renowned marine and fishing destinations, with some of his favorites including the Florida Keys, Cabo San Lucas, French Polynesia (Tahiti and Bora Bora) and the Maldives. On every journey, Alex looks forward to bringing home new and innovative ideas from around the world and incorporating them into his work with Lowcountry Marine Customs, at home in Charleston.
